A Study of the Antidiuretic Effect of Intraventricular Ouabain in the Rabbit

Abstract
In the previous report, ouabain administered into the lateral ventricle of the rabbit brain induced antidiuresis, suggesting that the activation of sympathetic outflow to the kidney might be involved in the effect.
It was attempted in this study to make clear the neural involvement by means of :nerve degeneration of the renal artery by phenol-treatment.
Ouabain given intracerebroventricularly in a dose of lag, produced decrease of the glomerular filtration rate, renal plasma flow and urinary excretions of electrolytes, concomitant with the decrease of urine flow, while it did not influence to the renal parameters in the kidney of which artery was treated with 10% phenol.
The above results indicate that the antidiuresis by intraventricular ouabain is induced by renal hemodynamic changes as a result of the central sympathetic activation to the kidney.
